And Why "Show Your Work" Has Become the Only Defensible Position

On March 18th, 2026, EU Parliament committees voted to delay high-risk AI system obligations to December 2027. Do not misinterpret this as sixteen months of breathing room. The delay is not a reprieve. It is a moment of clarity.

In March 2026, European regulators did something consequential.

They did not repeal the EU AI Act. They did not reduce its ambition. They did not soften its penalties.

Instead, they delayed the enforcement timeline for high-risk obligations — pushing formal compliance expectations toward 2027 and beyond, while acknowledging that the infrastructure required to support those obligations is not yet fully formed.

Although the EU AI Act does not use the phrase "show your work," its structure makes the requirement unmistakable. Through its provisions, it demands that organisations document how systems are designed, trace how decisions are made, monitor behaviour over time, reconstruct events after the fact, and demonstrate oversight and intervention capability.

Taken together, these requirements form a single expectation: that organisations can make their systems legible — before, during, and after operation.

Modern AI systems do not simply execute predefined logic. They generate behaviour dynamically — through chained actions, evolving inputs, and probabilistic inference. The "work" is not static. It is created at runtime.

It is no longer sufficient to describe how a system should behave. Organisations must be able to demonstrate how it actually behaved.

V. The Regulatory Gap

Regulation assumes describable systems, bounded behaviour, and predictable outcomes. Technology increasingly produces compositional systems, emergent behaviour, and unbounded outcome spaces.

The delay in enforcement is, in part, an acknowledgment of this gap. But the gap itself remains. And in that gap, organisations must operate.

Not: "Did you design the system correctly?" But: "Can you show what happened when it acted?"

Those who can explain their systems

Able to operate confidently in high-risk domains, scale across jurisdictions, and withstand enforcement as it matures.

Those who cannot

Exposed to regulatory action, litigation, and loss of enterprise trust as scrutiny intensifies over the coming years.
